Privacy Policy

Who we are
We are a research collaboration group based at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada. Our website address is housingcommonsresearch.ca. This policy may be updated as new features or services are added.

Newsletters and Communications

If you subscribe to our email newsletter, you can unsubscribe at any time by selecting the “unsubscribe” link included in each message. If you have subscribed to SMS updates, you may stop receiving messages by replying STOP.

Under Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), we may send you marketing or informational messages only with your consent.
Consent may be:

  • Express, when you actively agree (e.g., by checking a box on a sign-up form), or
  • Implied, for example, when you register for an event or request information from us.
  • Important info, like a schedule change, is not considered marketing and may be sent.

You may withdraw your consent at any time by using the unsubscribe options provided or by contacting us directly.

Comments

When visitors leave comments, we collect the data shown in the comment form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent to help detect spam. A hashed version of your email address may be provided to Gravatar (see Automattic Privacy Policy), the same makers of WordPress. Once your comment is approved, your Gravatar profile image (if any) may be publicly visible next to your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, please avoid uploading files that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Other visitors may be able to download and extract this information.

Cookies

We and selected third parties use cookies or similar technologies for technical purposes and, with your consent, for analytics or other purposes as specified in this policy.

Cookies may be set by:

  • WordPress, for site functionality and commenting;
  • Google Analytics, to understand how visitors use our website.

If you leave a comment, you may opt to save your name, email, and website in cookies for convenience. These last one year.
Login cookies last two days (or two weeks if “Remember Me” is selected). Display preference cookies last one year.
Editing or publishing a post sets a temporary cookie containing the post ID (no personal data).

You can disable cookies through your browser settings, though this may affect site functionality.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., YouTube videos, images, or other media). Embedded content from other websites behaves as if the visitor has visited the other website, which may collect data, use cookies, or track interactions independently of our site.

Data Sharing

Contact and survey form data are received by email in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) of Ontario and the Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

Email newsletter contact information is stored securely by Brevo (see Brevo Privacy Policy), which outlines how it collects, uses, and protects user data in compliance with applicable privacy laws and user consent.

Comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service called Akismet (see Akismet Privacy Policy), which is also made by the makers of WordPress.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Data Retention

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely.
If you register for an account, you can view, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except your username).

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Request a copy of your personal data we hold.
  • Request correction or deletion of your data, except where required for legal, administrative, or security reasons.
  • Withdraw consent for communications or data processing at any time.
