Overview

On January 27, 2026, Exchanging Futures: International Perspectives on Housing Commons brought together partners from Canada and Uganda for an open and thoughtful conversation facilitated through Rooftops Canada’s international knowledge exchange program. Centring women-led housing movements and grassroots housing work in Kampala, Uganda, the discussion reflected on how knowledge, care, and collaboration move across borders, and why it is so important to look beyond Western and Eurocentric frameworks when imagining more just housing futures.

The conversation featured the leadership and insights of Dorothy Baziwe (Shelter and Settlements Alternative, Kampala, Uganda) and Dr. Peter Kasaija (Urban Action Lab, Makerere University, Uganda), alongside reflections from Geneviève Drouin and Efemena Ozouga (Rooftops Canada) and Alia Abaya (Circle Community Land Trust, Toronto). Together, the speakers explored what meaningful international exchange can look like when it is grounded in listening, reciprocity, and mutual learning.
